Daft Punk – Musique Vol.1: 1993 - 2005 (2006)

Let`s take a step forward! Back to the future!

Daft Punk is a french duo and one of the pioneers in electronic music. Along more than a decade of production and success they`ve become one of the most influencing group in the electronic field.

Rather than a “best of”, Musique Vol.1 may represent an state of art “best of” compilation of Daft Punk releases over 12 years of career. It may not aggregate much for long time fans (like any other compilation of this kind) since it comprises most of their greatest hits, but it may be a good start point for those who didn`t know much about their work or those who always followed them from a certain distance and never took their material for a deeper examination (which was my case..).

Creative techno & club house music made with disco-funk influences and samples! Highly recommended..

Marlena Shaw - The Spice of Life (1969)

Marlena Shaw started singing in the mid 60`s and has an active career until now. She worked with many influent artists in important record labels starting from Chess following Blue Note (first female in the label), Columbia, Verve and others.

The Spice of Life is her second album release in Cadet Records, a subsidiary of Chess label. Can`t say much about this album but if let me go direct to the point the album-value hit is track n°7, "California Soul".

However this is not the only good track here and for those who think this is just a soul singer album, be careful! Keep in mind the production involves Marlena together with the arrangements of Richard Evans & Charles Stepney! Highlights still include "Woman of Ghetto" and "Liberal Conversation", in my poor opinion..

A lot of influences and genres crossings from blues, r`n`b, jazz, funk and of course soul!

Tracklist:
01. Woman of the Ghetto (6:02)
02. Stormy Monday (3:01)
03. Where Can I Go? (2:21)
04. I'm Satisfied (2:48)
05. I Wish I Knew (How It Would Feel to Be Free) (3:12)
06. Liberation Conversation (2:03)
07. California Soul (2:59)
08. Go Away, Little Boy (2:45)
09. Looking Through the Eyes of Love (3:00)
10. Anyone Can Move a Mountain (3:03)

Alan Hawkshaw - Mo’Hawk – The Essential Vibes & Grooves 1967 – 1973 (2003)

A treasure trove of funk from one of the greatest unsung heroes of the genre! Alan Hawkshaw, a high-talented Hammond organ player, was one of the coolest cats in the British studio scene of the 60s and 70s - a period that had him doing countless recordings for TV, radio, film, and other commercial sources. Like many active British session player, Alan Hawkshaw, in addition to playing on many records by stars, did some recording as part of studio-only bands and for music library albums. Mo'Hawk selects 20 such tracks from 1967-1975, emphasizing ones that put his soul-rock-jazz Hammond organ to the fore. Some were credited to bands when first released -- four to the Mohawks, one to the Salon Band, and one to Rumplestiltskin.

This bountiful collection really do justice to Alan's genius - filled with great tunes that crackle with hot Hammond organ licks, sweet electric piano bits, and a mad mix of easy and funk that always satisfies. Alan Hawkshaw remains a high profile name amongst collectors!

Various shades of easy listening, soul, funk, jazz, and psychedelia make their way into the tracks! Highly recommended!
