Stanley Turrentine - Don’t Mess With Mr.T (1973)

As I`ve promised..

..an earful and joyous jazz experience!

Just a brief description:
Born in a musician family, Stanley Turrentine started his career as saxophonist far in the 50`s and was active almost until his death in 2000. During his long trajectory he released many records in blues, rnb, soul jazz and jazz fusion genres with excellent artists.

I`m really not his biggest fan and don`t much about him. Well, I don`t about you but when I read the heavy names involved in this production, that`s enough for me! Creed Taylor, Idris Muhammad, Ron Carter and Bob James just say a few names (sorry, the list is vast..) and can`t forget to say that album name track comes from Marvin Gaye... enough ah?!

Maybe not the best, but still one of the greatest on the sax..
You deserve to taste it!

Tracklist:
1. Don't Mess With Mister T.
2. Two for T
3. Too Blue
4. I Could Never (Repay Your Love)
5. Pieces of Dreams
6. Don't Mess With Mister T. (Alternate Take)

Modjo - Modjo (2001)

Hi there,

I think I wasn`t too clear when we talked about "sampling" some posts ago.
This technique isn`t used only in hip hop but in almost every kind of genre and this is fantastic! Music is always being reinvented throughout time.

I`m sure you have already listened many tracks that were sampled but you didn`t know that. A classical example, the track Lady (Hear me tonight) by Modjo which`s got the top of the parades for weeks in everywhere a radio existed was based on a sample by Chic`s track (here is Chic again..) from 1982 called Soup For One.
Check it out!

Well, I have a tendency to think the originals are always better. In this particular case I think both them are good. Modjo has done I good job in beggining of 2000`s joininig old Disco themes with House 4x4 style. That`s sad they stopped producing although remixes of tracks like Lady, Chillin` and On Fire are released until nowadays.

In their only cd album release you can fell the Modjo`s french disco house taste. The first track is a usual openning track. Track 3 certainly brings good memories for anyone! Tracks number 2, 7, 9 and 10 are aligned to Lady keeping the disco flavor! Track 4 just fills the bag. Tracks 5, 6 and 11 are melow songs... not my business. This one seems to be the japonese release so it also has tracks 12, 13 and 14 that include other versions. A little bit pop but still a nice house album for your collection!

Traklist:

Laidback - Internacional (1997)

In a previous post I said I didn`t like techno that much and the same happens with its closely related styles.

But it doesn`t mean I don`t like electronic music. In fact I really appreciate some kinds of "emusic" and I`d like to share some information about one of my favorite electronic & dance music (sub)genres, the BIG BEAT!

You can easily get more infos clicking "big beat" above or doing a fast google search. In a few words it`s probably the funkest, the rockest and the housest style that has ever existed in breakbeat scene. Given its hybridisation, eclecticism and experimentalism it`s not much easy to describe it, so in order to have a better idea of what it`s all about, a few names of big beat producers may help. The roster includes The Chemical Brothers, The Crystal Method, Daft Punk, Fatboy Slim, Groove Armada, The Prodigy, Propellerheads and many others..

?!?! Maybe some are surprised for recognizing some names and still ain`t got any idea of what the hell big beat is. So a little appreciation (yes, I think you`ll appreciate it!) can help too.

I don`t know much about Laidback but in this album you may get connected with good tunes from a moment in which Big Beat scene was flourishing.

Move your body till your bones catch fire!!

Paul Kalkbrenner - Berlin Calling - OST (2008)

This post is about this movie:

I knew about this film sometime ago.
It seems interesting but I still couldn`t find it to watch. So I won`t post the movie but you can check the soundtrack.

It`s all about techno which I don`t appreciate the most. A few tracks are good but not spectacular and the rest is just that 4x4 beat style filled with some keyboard harmonic, few-notes-repeating melodies plus some electronic noises. But that`s just my opinion...

The bright side is that it`s not that heavy and noisy style of music, I`d say it`s listenable to be fair, so that it can be useful if the people you are with like things such as electro/milimal/tech and you don`t wanna make your ears bleed.

For god`s sake, I really don`t know why the hell I`m posting this! I`m listening a first class Disco right now! But here it goes:

Tracklist:

01 Paul Kalkbrenner - Aaron
02 Paul Kalkbrenner - Queer Fellow

VA - Gilles Peterson in Africa (2005)

I`ve been searching something to post here that could express, at least in my own solitary cell of mind, the ideia of "Root" instead of "Beginning" which was a little bit boring.

So, as you might know, I`ve been on a journey through african sounds...

I wasn`t much successful until I faced this double-CD compilation. Maybe some of you may not know the man responsible for this selection of tracks, that is, Gilles Peterson.

So i`ll briefly present him:

Gilles Peterson is a DJ, record collector and record label owner from London. Although his trajectoty started far away in the mid- and late- 80`s as an exponent in acid jazz, jazz-funk and latin music, he`s mostly recognised by his
radio program at BBC`s Radio 1 station from 1998 to the present and by his Worldwide project.

As a record label owner he`s integrally linked to 3 labels. At
Acid Jazz Rec he was was responsible for huge names like Brand New Heavies, Jamiroquai, James Taylor Quartet and Snowboy. In his second label, Talkin' Loud , the list of released projects include Young Disciples and Incognito, just to mention some. And, his current Brownswood Recordings has produced Ben Westbeech and the japanese jazz band "Soil & Pimp Sessions", among other releases.

He`s also considered one of the biggest record digger in the world, collecting lots of 70`s, latin, afro music.
That`s enough!!

In this compilation you can listen different sets of afro oriented sounds.

CD 1 (or "The Soul") contain some old-fashion-afro-tracks, mainly afrofunk and afrobeat tunes with that jazzy flavor from heavy artists like Manu Dibango, Fela Kuti, Mulato Astaque and Miriam Makeba. In CD 2 ("The Spirit") there`s a shift to more comtemporary but still afro-rooted sounds and include names such as Master At Work, Konono N°1, Carl Craig and Thievery Corporation.

Tracklist:

"The Soul"
1.Intro
2.Oscar Sulley - Bukom Mashie
3.Peter King - Ajo
4.Manu Dibango - New Bell

7.Fegadu Amde-Mesgel - Asmarina
8.Mulatu Astatke - Mulatu
9.Miriam Makeba - Samba
10.Letta Mbulu - Mahlalela
11.Abdullah Ibrahim - Did You Hear That Sound (Toshio Matsuura remix)

Just for curiosity:

#1 A long time ago, Gilles Peterson was one of artists invited to play at Peter Gabriel`s wedding party in a private beach. Phil Collins was presenting before Gilles and Phil was playing some african music. So he decided to play some afro sounds too, but it lasted just about 10 minutes. The wife`s family literally cut Gilles` tracks and started playing musics like
The Birdie Song by The Tweets (how dare them??). I totally refuse to embed this music video here!!

#2 I know some of my friends don`t know these names above but I`m sure they recognise this Miriam Makeba`s melody:

VA - Sugar Hill Club Classics (1998)

I`m not having many time and because of that there`s a lack of ideas about what to post.

So let`s continue with "beggining" plus "ways to make music"!!

I know many people will say who the prat doesn`t know Sugar Hill Gang?? Well, sad but true, I used to be one of them...

Others will say that they didn`t start anything! BUT who could imagine that in 1979 these guys would make a 14 min hip hop record??? AND that this music would hit in the whole world a genre that was not heard in other country but US?? SO, they deserve to be recognised at least as one of hip hop precussor.

Now lets talk about making music.

First of all, listen Rapper`s Delight by Sugar Hill Gang:

Now, listen to Good Times by Chic:

Well, probably you`ve got it. It`s almost th same music, isn`t it??

Yes, people call it "sampling". Why is it called like that? `cause the DJ captures a sample of the track and repeats (loops) it over and over. That`s the ways Hip Hop should always be: DJ sampling and MC`s rhyming. Unfortunately, some "modern" hip hop producers seem to have forgotten this basics and have been making bad music in my poor opinion..

So if you want to expand your hip hop knowlegde you shouldn`t look to the current hip hop scene but to the former one. And (guess what?) here comes a wonderful double-CD-old-school-Hip-Hop-set.

"Back to the Old School"

Just for curiosity:

Chic is a disco band from a moment in which Disco Music was clearly declining, probably they`re one of the last groups that became famous producing Disco. Famous tracks also include "We are Family" and "Le Freak".

So, here you`re getting some information about the death of Disco Era but you could check in previous posts that it`s still alive in the NuDisco scene.

See yo!!

Birdy Nam Nam - Birdy Nam Nam (2005)

Still in the directions of new/different ways to make music, let`s gather some info about Bird Nam Nam group.

Before I try to explain what these guys do, watch it yourself!!

As you can see, Birdy Nam Nam is formed by 4 highly skilled DJs and each of them "plays" a part of some music resulting in a new music. But it`s not just pressing play button, they are always working it out (looping, scratching, cutting and whatever). In other words, they use turntables as musical instruments!

In their first homonymous album you can check their singular music constructed from jazz, soul, disco e black music vinyls they owned. A real colourful picture of rhythms invented by these french artists.

Tracklist:

1. Ready For War, Ready For Whut?
2. Body, Mind, Spirit...
3. Too Much Skunk Tonight...
4. Transition
5. Kind Of Laid Back

Dusty forgotten records revived by the hands of new artists through their edits... maybe that`s the best way I can express these musics. Other people just call it "NU DISCO"!

In these compilations you will hear a very interesting "new" way to produce music (if they produce something indeed), making the old sounds new and vice versa. Maybe for some listeners, it shows how much our the modern danceflooor music inherited from old styles and also how much it could have inherited....
