Database presents Ugly Edits Vol. 2 (2009)

November is my B-day`s month and it`s coming to the end. So here comes something to make your party up before the time is over!!

DATABASE is a brazilian duo that comprises childhood friends, Lucio Morais and Yuri Chix. While students in film school, the two became famous for gathering the entire student body together—from freshman geek to senior stud—to the dance floor of São Paulo’s legendary, now-extinct club, “AmpGalaxy".

The two released their first compilation, “Ugly edits Vol.1” in early 2008. Around this time, they were invited to remix Fatboy Slim, and got together with his label (Southern Fried Records) to release their Miami EP, collaborating with Bonde do Role. From these two releases, their notoriety grew rapidly in Brazil, playing in some of the country’s biggest festivals.

In 2009 they released their second compilation, “Ugly edits Vol.2”. This is not a physical compilation album but a digital release and you can get it for free at their
myspace in good quality (320 kbps).

Just to make things easy you can CLICK HERE, instead. You can check also check it at last.fm and get the tracks there, but it`s poor quality and only contain Database`s edits which is less than half of the pack that includes 13 DB`s edits plus 23 edits from their friends.

Fdel - Audiofdelity

Another cut & paste from mvremix:

"Perth based producer Fdel has been working with the lads from Downsyde and HydroFunk records for quite some time... His debut solo release "Audiofdelity" has actually been released in Australia for a while, but it's definitely an album in need of more international exposure.

Fdel is obviously a very talented producer, the smoothness and clarity on this album is undeniable, there's nothing on there that really doesn't work, and work well. The change ups, bridges, and breakdowns have all been executed way too nicely. It's a pleasure to listen to from start to finish. This album covers all bases, it could really be played anywhere... But the real strength of the album is in the party tracks, the funk, the undeniable phatness. This album really parties hard, dudes.

...reminiscent of Katalyst's 2002 masterpiece "Manipulating Agent", "Audiofdelity" has some very similar elements. The classic drums, the funky ass basslines, the crazily chopped keys, the huge horns, the well chosen and well placed vocal samples; they're all there, the same as they were on Katalyst's release. This could be (and most likely is) why "Audiofdelity" was released through Katalyst's own Invada records."

This guy is great! knows what to do when mixing old and new across and between styles! Lots of samples, some extracted from music you can find around here..

Nufunk doping stuff!! highly recommended whether you like funk, breaks, hip hop, and mash ups!

David Mancuso presents The Loft - Volume Two (2000)

Fast post, so words here aren`t mine:

"Unmixed compilation from David Mancuso, reflecting the eclectic music he played to friends during the mid to late seventies in his New York loft, helping to create the modern nightclub in the process. The CD's show why Mancuso enjoys legendary status within the dance community. The selection is superb, each track helps the next breathe, themes emerge. After hearing The Orb's Little Fluffy Clouds following the closing rain effects from the final sixteen minutes of the Steve Miller band, other mixes and comps look like train wrecks."

VA – Discovered: A Collection Of Daft Funk Samples (2007)

Hi people,
Let`s keep the focus on Daft Punk!

It`s pretty known that a large body of the music produced in the last decades are not fully produced. I mean, people don`t get the instruments, start to play and that`s all - there is the music, especially in electronic music genres. No matter whether it`s a sample, a remix or an edit, one of the most common questions is “where this music comes from?”

For Daft Punk fanatics wondering about the origins of the French electronica duo's tunes, DISCOVERED solves the mystery, revealing the source material behind many of the act's catchiest melodies and most infectious rhythms.

This is a collection of the original tunes that shows us where Daft Punk took their original samples from. Listening to this disc will make your reassess the French duo's musical prowess. These 12 tracks lay down enough funked-up soul and disco to start your own 70s themed club night; an assortment of flavoured classics with enough hidden gems to keep us both interested and informed.

You can check good reviews out there. Click

Daft Punk – Musique Vol.1: 1993 - 2005 (2006)

Let`s take a step forward! Back to the future!

Daft Punk is a french duo and one of the pioneers in electronic music. Along more than a decade of production and success they`ve become one of the most influencing group in the electronic field.

Rather than a “best of”, Musique Vol.1 may represent an state of art “best of” compilation of Daft Punk releases over 12 years of career. It may not aggregate much for long time fans (like any other compilation of this kind) since it comprises most of their greatest hits, but it may be a good start point for those who didn`t know much about their work or those who always followed them from a certain distance and never took their material for a deeper examination (which was my case..).

Creative techno & club house music made with disco-funk influences and samples! Highly recommended..

Marlena Shaw - The Spice of Life (1969)

Marlena Shaw started singing in the mid 60`s and has an active career until now. She worked with many influent artists in important record labels starting from Chess following Blue Note (first female in the label), Columbia, Verve and others.

The Spice of Life is her second album release in Cadet Records, a subsidiary of Chess label. Can`t say much about this album but if let me go direct to the point the album-value hit is track n°7, "California Soul".

However this is not the only good track here and for those who think this is just a soul singer album, be careful! Keep in mind the production involves Marlena together with the arrangements of Richard Evans & Charles Stepney! Highlights still include "Woman of Ghetto" and "Liberal Conversation", in my poor opinion..

A lot of influences and genres crossings from blues, r`n`b, jazz, funk and of course soul!

Tracklist:
01. Woman of the Ghetto (6:02)
02. Stormy Monday (3:01)
03. Where Can I Go? (2:21)

Alan Hawkshaw - Mo’Hawk – The Essential Vibes & Grooves 1967 – 1973 (2003)

A treasure trove of funk from one of the greatest unsung heroes of the genre! Alan Hawkshaw, a high-talented Hammond organ player, was one of the coolest cats in the British studio scene of the 60s and 70s - a period that had him doing countless recordings for TV, radio, film, and other commercial sources. Like many active British session player, Alan Hawkshaw, in addition to playing on many records by stars, did some recording as part of studio-only bands and for music library albums. Mo'Hawk selects 20 such tracks from 1967-1975, emphasizing ones that put his soul-rock-jazz Hammond organ to the fore. Some were credited to bands when first released -- four to the Mohawks, one to the Salon Band, and one to Rumplestiltskin.

This bountiful collection really do justice to Alan's genius - filled with great tunes that crackle with hot Hammond organ licks, sweet electric piano bits, and a mad mix of easy and funk that always satisfies. Alan Hawkshaw remains a high profile name amongst collectors!

Various shades of easy listening, soul, funk, jazz, and psychedelia make their way into the tracks! Highly recommended!

Men from S.P.E.C.T.R.E - The Living Eye (2006)

Forty year ago something was really happening… maybe Woodstock happens until now. Who knows?!

Here comes something that gets this point. Poorly known but good music.

The Switzerland band Men From S.P.E.C.T.R.E. combines the best psychedelic groove with the funkiest 60’s spy-fi and the swingingest library music. The rough edges and instrumental action sound echoes the space-rock-bands and soundtracks of the 70s. The catchy beat of Drums, Congas and Bass join the wild Hammond organ and fuzzy Guitar to mash-up the scenes. Threir influences cover Soundtracks, Hippies, 60s Beat, Mods, Rockers, Mockers, Library Music, Pill-Parties, 70s Rock music.

"The Living Eye" is the third record of the S.P.E.C.T.R.E.’s released on American label Hammondbeat Records. It is more indulgent, more psychedelic, and hits the beat harder than the previous records. Rather than trying to recreate the 60's mod sound, the men are now incorporating a more modern vision while staying true to the roots of the movement they further. Their songs are layered with multiple levels of sound, impeccable timing with sound effects that work with the music and don't stand out as cheap sonics, and the rhythms are both groovy and psychedelic at the same time. This album has good flow while each song is very polished and fluid in it's own right. No dead spots.

Funky hammond grooves, space and psychedelic 60`s to 70`s rock, spy movie themes summed with FX sounds and hard beating drum breaks!

Michael Jackson Regrooved (2009)

"The release that is flooding the blogosphere, from the record label that is setting the nufunk scene!"

Originally a prolific club night deep in the south west of England, Goodgroove was known for serving up a unique mash up of disco, funk and breaks. As the popularity of the Goodgroove sound grew, starting record label was a natural evolution because the music played in the club was highly sought after, but not easily available for DJ's to buy. The first EP to be released on Goodgroove 'The Regrooved Series 1' is a collection of the best tracks straight from the original club night which proved to be even more popular than anticipated, and so this successful theme has expanded into the Goodgroove label releasing the best tracks from funky club nights around the world. Fans and followers of the label include; Norman Jay, Andy Smith, Freddie Fresh, Daddy G (Massive Attack), DJ Yoda, Craig Charles, Boca 45, A Skillz.

Freddie Cruger - Just Chillin` In The Spot (2008)

The name Freddie Cruger might be new to most, but for the past several years, Cruger's alter ego, Red Astaire, has been tearing up hip-hop and soul dance floors.

He first got in contact with hip hop when he started out as a break dancer in the early 80s. His electric boogie dancing brother was collecting records at that time, which introduced Freddie to the world of black dance music. Around 85-86 he worked weekends at a legendary import record store in Stockholm called Space (special job cleaning the toilet). At this time he started buying more and more records, mostly electro and rap records but also disco/funk 12"/7"inch classics. After years of work and a great trajectory in important labels (including his own Homegrown label) he became a swedish hip hop legend.

JUST CHILLIN' IN THE SPOT is Cruger's latest album with an eclectic mix of instrumental hip hop/downtempo tracks featuring his signature jazzy and soulful beats. He describes the album simply as “mostly instrumental”, making it a large departure from his vocal driven debut.
But it is bit more than that. It´s a fresh set of instrumental grooves, a nice blend of beats, loads of jazzy elements (horns and vibes), vocal samples, and fantastic rhythms. The beats are always inviting and mixes jazz, Latin, soul and funk without ever falling into one genre trapping or another, always in service of the beats & rhythms. There's a level of warmth here that's lacking in lesser producers, nothing revolutionary just high quality, compelling beatcraft.

Nice work! Nice chilling beats and grooves!

Australian project Flow Dynamics has created boogie fever and booty havoc on dancefloors across the globe. Fusing live musicians with a pile of electronics and sampling, multi- instrumentalist and producer Dave McKinney (who also works full-time as a marine biologist with the Australian Institute of Marine Sciences) has proved to be a musical force on the world stage. When the first Flow Dynamics vinyl singles were released the reaction was immediate.

Dave's music has been played by heavy names such as Kenny Dope, Gilles Peterson, Quanti, Mr Scruff, Fort Knox Five, Askillz, Beatfanatic, Nickodemus, Krafty Kuts, All Good Funk Alliance, Freddie Cruger, UFO, Ed Royal, DJ Regal, Adam Freeland, and DJ Spinna.

His debut self-titled Flow Dynamics album brings full of funky jams and block party breaks! The record takes the listener on a journey through the world of funk and soul based beats with lots of uptempo party cuts, chilled downtempo grooves and everything in between. The album digs deep into the traditions of funk and soul, with lots of live musicians, heavy drums, funky basslines, tight horn sections, sharp cuts, and raw funk vocals!

I personally remember the times when it was release, almost got crazy on these nufunk groovy sounds…Highly recommended!

Jestofunk - Universal Mother (1998)

"write it, cut it, paste it, save it, load it, check it, quick rewrite it": almost all I`m doing at the moment..

Jestofunk started in the early 90`s with three Italian DJ's (Claudio 'Moz-Art' Rispoli, Francesco Farias and Blade) and since that they`ve done an irresistible mix of Funk, Soul, R&B and House music.

With a groovy fusion between the DJ style and the live instrumentation, connected with the Afroamerican side of contemporary music, Jestofunk arrived to this second album after a six years itinerary through Jazz, Funk, Soul and the most experimental sounds generated for the Dancefloor.

Universal Mother is a summit of the past experieces of the band, a tribute to the jazz funk of the 70's but also to modern technologies. This work is clearly a continuation of their previous album, maybe the group has expanded its sound a bit, but there really isn't much room for improvement here, only small refinements, as Jestofunk was already at the top of its game. From funky-soul-jazzy rhythms to electronic vibes, featuring very special guest (Jocelyn Brown, Freddy Mc Gregor and once again Fred Wesley and Ce Ce Rogers) the group serves up some of the finest jazz-dance music around.

Can`t say more about it… just go ahead and try it!

Tracklist:
1. Universal Mother [Let Yourself Flow] (1:47)
2. Be A Warrior (5:33) - Vocals: Ce Ce Rogers
3. Colour (5:48)
4. Universal Love (5:31) - Vocals: Freddie McGregor
5. If You've Got It, You'll Get It (6:14) - Featuring: Fred Wesley
6. Special Love (5:06) - Vocals: Jocelyn Brown
7. Happy (5:15) - Vocals: Ce Ce Rogers
8. Jestofunk, Jestofunk (3:45) - Vocals: Ce Ce Rogers
9. Try My Love (5:57) - Vocals: Ce Ce Rogers
10. We Are (0:43)
11. Nel Nome Del Suono (6:04)
12. Why ? (6:04) - Vocals: Ce Ce Rogers
13. PFunk Station (5:06)
14. Earthquake (4:51)
15. Reflexion (0:55)

Kilowatts - Ground State (2007)

Hi there!

I was out for a while, and now back for few...

It`s time to leave some more recent and modern ingredient to feed our ears here. We can´t exist without a past, but can`t live without the future......ok, that means nothing..

Now let me show you an artist I`ve found times ago when I was looking for downtempo/chilling things:
KILOWATTS

I really got surprised when first heard it. A real groovy experiment mixing elements of different styles like ambient, dub, psychill, idm, glitch and even techno and breaks. The notorious results this complex styles equation is what we find in his 5th album realease, GROUND STATE.

You can read many review (1, 2) doing a fast google on it that are better than I could do by now. I found even a track by track review here.

But if you`re sick of reading or if you don`t care about what others say, then you can check it by yourself below.

Pure groovy/techy chilling effects.

Tracklist:

Flevans - Unfabulous (2007)

This one is just a copy & paste from wherever...mixing things, you know.

Flevans began making music in his home town of Brighton using a 4 track cassette recorder on which he'd spend hours looping breaks and hooks to create tracks. More than that, as a trained multi-instrumentalist – playing guitar, bass and piano, amongst others – Flevans had always incorporated some of his playing skills into his music.

Retaining the cheeky, dancefloor friendly attitude of his earlier releases, "Unfabulous" additionally benefits from an altogether more polished sound, unashamedly merging his trademark use of eccentric samples with the funkiest of breaks, a smattering of horns, and plenty of wah-wah of guitars. Essentially, it has all the ingredients you need to get the party started.

This a high-end Nujazz stuff. Check it yourself..

..Funky rhythms, mind blowing sounds, sexy vocals, grooves!.. it`s about music with feelings. Highly recommended.

Afrique - Soul Makossa (1973)

Born from Cameroon-born and Paris-based jazz saxophonist Manu DiBango`s "Soul Makossa" track and with the participation of heavy studio musicians that could keep the grooves on, this 1973`s album is one of the killer instrumental funk ever!

The 13 artists involved include the baterist Paul Humphrey (also played with Marvin Gaye, John Coltrane and others), the guitarist David T Walker (played with Aretha Franklin and Pharoah Sanders), the organist Charles Kynard (some pleople say he could have rivalled Richard 'Groove' Holmes in speed and accuracy) and 10 others who created not only a hit of the Dibango`s original, but an entire set of groove-driven instrumentals. "Soul Makossa" and "House Of Rising Funk” are certainly true gems that have been sampled all around.

A real dreamy 70`s-afro-jazz-funk mixture! Highly dangerous! Highly recommended too...

Stanley Turrentine - Don’t Mess With Mr.T (1973)

As I`ve promised..

..an earful and joyous jazz experience!

Just a brief description:
Born in a musician family, Stanley Turrentine started his career as saxophonist far in the 50`s and was active almost until his death in 2000. During his long trajectory he released many records in blues, rnb, soul jazz and jazz fusion genres with excellent artists.

I`m really not his biggest fan and don`t much about him. Well, I don`t about you but when I read the heavy names involved in this production, that`s enough for me! Creed Taylor, Idris Muhammad, Ron Carter and Bob James just say a few names (sorry, the list is vast..) and can`t forget to say that album name track comes from Marvin Gaye... enough ah?!

Maybe not the best, but still one of the greatest on the sax..
You deserve to taste it!

Tracklist:
1. Don't Mess With Mister T.
2. Two for T
3. Too Blue

Modjo - Modjo (2001)

Hi there,

I think I wasn`t too clear when we talked about "sampling" some posts ago.
This technique isn`t used only in hip hop but in almost every kind of genre and this is fantastic! Music is always being reinvented throughout time.

I`m sure you have already listened many tracks that were sampled but you didn`t know that. A classical example, the track Lady (Hear me tonight) by Modjo which`s got the top of the parades for weeks in everywhere a radio existed was based on a sample by Chic`s track (here is Chic again..) from 1982 called Soup For One.
Check it out!

Well, I have a tendency to think the originals are always better. In this particular case I think both them are good. Modjo has done I good job in beggining of 2000`s joininig old Disco themes with House 4x4 style. That`s sad they stopped producing although remixes of tracks like Lady, Chillin` and On Fire are released until nowadays.

In their only cd album release you can fell the Modjo`s french disco house taste. The first track is a usual openning track. Track 3 certainly brings good memories for anyone! Tracks number 2, 7, 9 and 10 are aligned to Lady keeping the disco flavor! Track 4 just fills the bag. Tracks 5, 6 and 11 are melow songs... not my business. This one seems to be the japonese release so it also has tracks 12, 13 and 14 that include other versions. A little bit pop but still a nice house album for your collection!

Traklist:
01. Acnowledgement [0:03:04.50]
02. Chillin' [0:04:52.32]

Laidback - Internacional (1997)

In a previous post I said I didn`t like techno that much and the same happens with its closely related styles.

But it doesn`t mean I don`t like electronic music. In fact I really appreciate some kinds of "emusic" and I`d like to share some information about one of my favorite electronic & dance music (sub)genres, the BIG BEAT!

You can easily get more infos clicking "big beat" above or doing a fast google search. In a few words it`s probably the funkest, the rockest and the housest style that has ever existed in breakbeat scene. Given its hybridisation, eclecticism and experimentalism it`s not much easy to describe it, so in order to have a better idea of what it`s all about, a few names of big beat producers may help. The roster includes The Chemical Brothers, The Crystal Method, Daft Punk, Fatboy Slim, Groove Armada, The Prodigy, Propellerheads and many others..

?!?! Maybe some are surprised for recognizing some names and still ain`t got any idea of what the hell big beat is. So a little appreciation (yes, I think you`ll appreciate it!) can help too.

I don`t know much about Laidback but in this album you may get connected with good tunes from a moment in which Big Beat scene was flourishing.

Paul Kalkbrenner - Berlin Calling - OST (2008)

This post is about this movie:

I knew about this film sometime ago.
It seems interesting but I still couldn`t find it to watch. So I won`t post the movie but you can check the soundtrack.

It`s all about techno which I don`t appreciate the most. A few tracks are good but not spectacular and the rest is just that 4x4 beat style filled with some keyboard harmonic, few-notes-repeating melodies plus some electronic noises. But that`s just my opinion...

The bright side is that it`s not that heavy and noisy style of music, I`d say it`s listenable to be fair, so that it can be useful if the people you are with like things such as electro/milimal/tech and you don`t wanna make your ears bleed.

For god`s sake, I really don`t know why the hell I`m posting this! I`m listening a first class Disco right now! But here it goes:

Tracklist:

02 Paul Kalkbrenner - Queer Fellow

VA - Gilles Peterson in Africa (2005)

I`ve been searching something to post here that could express, at least in my own solitary cell of mind, the ideia of "Root" instead of "Beginning" which was a little bit boring.

So, as you might know, I`ve been on a journey through african sounds...

I wasn`t much successful until I faced this double-CD compilation. Maybe some of you may not know the man responsible for this selection of tracks, that is, Gilles Peterson.

So i`ll briefly present him:

Gilles Peterson is a DJ, record collector and record label owner from London. Although his trajectoty started far away in the mid- and late- 80`s as an exponent in acid jazz, jazz-funk and latin music, he`s mostly recognised by his
radio program at BBC`s Radio 1 station from 1998 to the present and by his Worldwide project.

As a record label owner he`s integrally linked to 3 labels. At
Acid Jazz Rec he was was responsible for huge names like Brand New Heavies, Jamiroquai, James Taylor Quartet and Snowboy. In his second label, Talkin' Loud , the list of released projects include Young Disciples and Incognito, just to mention some. And, his current Brownswood Recordings has produced Ben Westbeech and the japanese jazz band "Soil & Pimp Sessions", among other releases.

He`s also considered one of the biggest record digger in the world, collecting lots of 70`s, latin, afro music.
That`s enough!!

In this compilation you can listen different sets of afro oriented sounds.

CD 1 (or "The Soul") contain some old-fashion-afro-tracks, mainly afrofunk and afrobeat tunes with that jazzy flavor from heavy artists like Manu Dibango, Fela Kuti, Mulato Astaque and Miriam Makeba. In CD 2 ("The Spirit") there`s a shift to more comtemporary but still afro-rooted sounds and include names such as Master At Work, Konono N°1, Carl Craig and Thievery Corporation.

Tracklist:

"The Soul"
1.Intro
2.Oscar Sulley - Bukom Mashie
3.Peter King - Ajo
4.Manu Dibango - New Bell

7.Fegadu Amde-Mesgel - Asmarina
8.Mulatu Astatke - Mulatu
9.Miriam Makeba - Samba
10.Letta Mbulu - Mahlalela
11.Abdullah Ibrahim - Did You Hear That Sound (Toshio Matsuura remix)

Just for curiosity:

#1 A long time ago, Gilles Peterson was one of artists invited to play at Peter Gabriel`s wedding party in a private beach. Phil Collins was presenting before Gilles and Phil was playing some african music. So he decided to play some afro sounds too, but it lasted just about 10 minutes. The wife`s family literally cut Gilles` tracks and started playing musics like
The Birdie Song by The Tweets (how dare them??). I totally refuse to embed this music video here!!

#2 I know some of my friends don`t know these names above but I`m sure they recognise this Miriam Makeba`s melody:

VA - Sugar Hill Club Classics (1998)

I`m not having many time and because of that there`s a lack of ideas about what to post.

So let`s continue with "beggining" plus "ways to make music"!!

I know many people will say who the prat doesn`t know Sugar Hill Gang?? Well, sad but true, I used to be one of them...

Others will say that they didn`t start anything! BUT who could imagine that in 1979 these guys would make a 14 min hip hop record??? AND that this music would hit in the whole world a genre that was not heard in other country but US?? SO, they deserve to be recognised at least as one of hip hop precussor.

Now lets talk about making music.

First of all, listen Rapper`s Delight by Sugar Hill Gang:

Now, listen to Good Times by Chic:

Well, probably you`ve got it. It`s almost th same music, isn`t it??

Yes, people call it "sampling". Why is it called like that? `cause the DJ captures a sample of the track and repeats (loops) it over and over. That`s the ways Hip Hop should always be: DJ sampling and MC`s rhyming. Unfortunately, some "modern" hip hop producers seem to have forgotten this basics and have been making bad music in my poor opinion..

So if you want to expand your hip hop knowlegde you shouldn`t look to the current hip hop scene but to the former one. And (guess what?) here comes a wonderful double-CD-old-school-Hip-Hop-set.

Just for curiosity:

Chic is a disco band from a moment in which Disco Music was clearly declining, probably they`re one of the last groups that became famous producing Disco. Famous tracks also include "We are Family" and "Le Freak".

So, here you`re getting some information about the death of Disco Era but you could check in previous posts that it`s still alive in the NuDisco scene.

See yo!!
